Web app or mobile app? How to choose.

Native Android app, installable web app or plain web application: what each one is good at, and how we help Kuching businesses decide.

When a business owner says “we need an app”, the real need is usually one of three things: customers who can book, register or pay from their phone; staff who can update records on the move; or a dashboard that shows what is happening right now. The right kind of app depends on which of these you are solving.

Option 1: a web application

Runs in the browser on any device. Nothing to install, and everyone always has the latest version. This is ideal for admin systems, dashboards, customer portals and anything used mostly on a laptop. Most of the custom systems we build are web applications.

Option 2: an installable web app (PWA)

A web app that can be added to the home screen and opens like an app, full screen. One codebase works on iPhone, Android and desktop, updates instantly and needs no app store approval. Great for booking tools, member portals, staff checklists and check-in apps.

Option 3: a native Android app

Built specifically for Android and published on Google Play. Choose this when you need a store listing, reliable offline use, background tasks, or deeper access to the phone’s hardware. In Malaysia, a large share of staff and customers use Android phones, which makes Android a practical first platform.

A quick way to decide

  • Mostly used at a desk? Web application.
  • Used on phones, by customers and staff on different devices? Installable web app.
  • Needs Google Play, offline work or phone hardware? Native Android app.
  • A mobile app plus an office team? A native or installable app for the field, with a web admin dashboard and an API connecting them.

Do not forget the backend

Every app needs a database, an admin panel, user accounts and often payments. That part is usually most of the work, and it is what keeps the app useful after launch. For Amber Global Logistics, the API we built lets agents update parcel tracking from their phones, processing 3,000+ records a day.
